I am often asked if Footbag has a shoe? Now if by you shoe they mean a sponsored Air Nike Footbag Freestyle Special? Then no.
Sadly Footbag is lacking in the shoe department. Many brands have come and gone and a few have stood the test of time, but none quite like the Adidas Rod Laver Tennis Shoe. Styling in original green and white these shoes have stood the test of time with their breathable mesh upper and large flat toebox. Many tricks have been learned and master with these very shoes.
Before you go searching the site for Rod Lavers, there are alternatives that I have found to be superior to the Rod Laver if performance and control are your goal. Running shoes are lighter and pointed toed so they take up less space during a simple legover or around-the-world.
What I like about running shoes is that they cushion the impact better than Lavers and at the same time place you on your toes. You are more able to spring into the next trick in running shoes. A few brands I like are, New Balance and Saucony. Both have their pros and cons just like Lavers, but the sleek design and smaller landing areas force you to play with proper form and balance. When you are off, you are off - the bag will roll off or drop. Unlike Lavers that will catch some far fetched stalls, but recovering from a bad catch is sometimes as difficult as the trick before it.
All in all, I would say that there are a lot of shoes out there to explore and try out. Until Nike starts pumping out the next Footbag Shoe, we are stuck with creativity and modification. Who knows you might discover the next best thing. And when you do, be sure to drop me a line so I can try them too.
